Taking the Midwest Beyond Northern Soul
Merging northern soul, classic R&B, and alternative rock to create their own unique, infectious sound, The Periodicals are a 10-piece powerhouse out of Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Formed in 2013 by singer-guitarist John Wedge, a London native, and guitarist Geoff Blake-Horst the band has evolved over the past decade into an audience-friendly juggernaut featuring soaring vocal harmonies and a three-piece horn section, and a lineup that reflects the entire community, with members from across the gender, race, and age spectra.
Whether on the main stage of the festival grounds or in the intimacy of a downtown club, The Periodicals performances are electric - brimming with rock energy and soul. Their typical set comprises deep cuts from their rich catalog of original songs along with a sprinkling of classics from the northern soul canon.
The Periodicals' trademark sound is founded on the stellar rhythm section of former Clyde Stubblefield sideman Steve Rosenblum on bass and funk-rock stalwart Dave Bush on drums. Their foundation is augmented by the swinging horn trio of Bob Jacobson (trumpet), Rob Henn (trombone), and Jamill Shaw (tenor sax) along with the shimmering keyboards of Raquel Aleman and Alida Lacosse's violin and hand percussion. Rounding out the sound are the incredible vocal stylings of Nikko Murphy, backed by the harmonies and guitar work of Bush, Wedge and Blake-Horst.
Fresh from a series of standout shows last year that included The Mile of Music, La Fete de Marquette, and Project North Festival, 2025 sees the band playing a number of prominent dates in support of a new live recording and video. Dates include The High Noon Saloon, UW Memorial Union Terrace, and The Sessions. This new release will feature three songs that have been the highlights of recent shows, and showcase their music for a whole new audience.
